A locksmith's apprenticeship usually takes four years to complete. Once a locksmith has agreed to hire you as an apprentice, they will enroll you in a TAFE that offers the title of locksmith. To become a locksmith, you usually need to do an internship in locksmith. The learning usually takes 48 months to complete.
To work as a locksmith in Western Australia, you'll need to obtain a security installer license from the Washington Police Licensing Services. Although there is a shortage of qualified locksmiths in some areas, opportunities for access through an apprenticeship are still limited. An apprentice locksmith is involved in a number of tasks, such as evaluating safety requirements; installing, adjusting, repairing and maintaining locks and related security equipment; manufacturing keys and changing combinations of locks; generally working on locks and hardware for residential, automotive, commercial and institutional doors. Depending on the area in which they work, locksmiths may need to be experts in using specialized tools, such as welding equipment and those used for precision manual work.
In addition to residential security systems, locksmiths can also be employed to work on security systems for government organizations or for the automotive industry.
